Pop Goes The News — Canadians Emma Donoghue, Rachel McAdams and The Weeknd are among the nominees announced Thursday for the 88th Academy Awards.

Donoghue is up for the Adapted Screenplay prize for Room and McAdams is competing for Supporting Actress for her work in Spotlight.

The list comes from the Broadcast Film Critics Association and Broadcast Television Journalists Association. Awards will be handed out Jan. 17 on A&E.

Many critics are predicting Spotlight (largely shot in Southern Ontario), The Revenant (mostly filmed in Alberta) and Room (made in Toronto) will be among the nominees for the top honour at the 88th Academy Awards on Feb. 28.
