‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ wins almost everything at 14th Dorian Film Awards

Pop Goes The NewsEverything Everywhere All at Once has almost swept the 14th Dorian Film Awards.

Members of GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics chose it as Film of the Year and LGBTQ Film of the Year and recognized Michelle Yeoh with Film Performance of the Year and Ke Huy Quan for Supporting Film Performance of the Year.

Yeoh will also received the Wilde Artist Award, given to “a truly groundbreaking force in film, theatre and/or television.”

Stephanie Hsu was honoured as the Rising Star of the Year.

Everything was also named the Visually Striking Film of the Year and earned directing and screenplay awards for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.

Other Dorian Film Awards winners announced on Feb. 23 include RRR as Non-English Language Film of the Year and Aftersun as Unsung Film of the Year – an award that recognizes “an exceptional movie worthy of greater attention.”

The Animated Film of the Year is Marcel the Shell with Shoes On and Pearl  was named Campiest Flick of the Year. Hildur Guðnadóttir’s Tár score earned Film Music of the Year.

Laura Poitra’s documentary All the Beauty and the Bloodshed won Documentary of the Year and LGBTQ Documentary of the Year.

Janelle Monáe, who gave a memorable performance in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, was named the winner of the GALECA LGBTQIA+ Film Trailblazer Award.

GALECA, which has more than 400 members, is significantly bigger than the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hands out the Golden Globes.

Canada was represented in the nominations this year by Sarah Polley, who was up for both Director and Screenplay of the Year (for the made-in-Ontario drama Women Talking) and Brendan Fraser, who was nominated for Film Performance of the Year (for The Whale). Avatar: The Way of Water, directed by Canada’s James Cameron, was vying for Visually Striking Film of the Year.

“How great is that the movies are back, from big, exciting blockbuster to personal and quirky stories that hit home for all types of cinema fans?,” said executive director John Griffiths, in a release. “No matter what’s going on in the mind of a certain Florida governor and his ilk, the best movies, and TV too, will only continue to reflect what’s going on in the real world – and parallel ones too.

“Looking at our nominees and winners, you can let out a nice, deep breath.”
