Pop Goes The News – Nomadland was named Best Film and Most Visually Striking Film at Sunday’s Dorian Awards, where it also earned Chloé Zhao a win for Best Director.
The Dorian Awards are chosen through voting by the nearly 300 members of GALECA, an organization of LGBTQ entertainment journalists. (By comparison, the Golden Globes winners are determined by a group of fewer than 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.)
Zhao said winning a Dorian was “deeply meaningful” because the award is named in honour of “one of my greatest heroes,” Oscar Wilde. She added: “Nomadland is about a woman who goes on a journey of grief and healing and ultimately of self-discovery and self-acceptance.”
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was named Best LGBTQ Film and one of its stars, the late Chadwick Boseman, was recognized with the award for Best Film Performance – Actor.
Accepting on behalf of Bosman was co-star Colman Domingo, who remembered him as “such an incredible human, scholar, humanitarian, and a really wonderful actor.”
The South Korean film Minari also picked up a pair of Dorians – for Best Non-English Language Film and Best Film Performance – Supporting Actress (Yuh-Jung Youn).
Pretty Young Woman star Carey Mulligan won the Dorian for Best Film Performance – Actress. “I’m just so happy that [the film] has resonated, and I’m so grateful to [director Emerald Fennell] for inviting me along for the ride,” Mulligan said. Fennell was the Best Screenplay winner.
The documentaries Welcome to Chechnya and Disclosure tied in two categories – Best Documentary and Best LGBTQ Documentary.
The Wilde Artist Award, honouring “a truly groundbreaking force in entertainment,” was presented to Dolly Parton.
“Thank you to all the members of the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics for this lovely Wilde Artist award,” the country music icon said, in statement. “I’m not sure I’m as edgy as past winners … but I am honoured and humbled. I appreciate all of you entertainment journalists who are so passionate and are working so hard.”
The Dorians also paid tribute to Leslie Jordan, who appears in the made-in-Montreal biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday, with the Timeless Star award.
Canada’s Rachel McAdams accepted the Dorian for Campiest Flick, which went to Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. She joked that her co-star Will Ferrell might be “a little pissed” with the honour because he considers the movie to be “a serious drama, a thespian’s opus.”
The editorial director of Pop Goes The News is a Dorian Awards voter.
