Pop Goes The News – The Canadian comedy series Schitt’s Creek was a big winner at the inaugural Dorian TV Awards, handed out by GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics.
The made-in-Ontario show was named Best TV Comedy and Best LGBTQ TV Show and its homegrown stars Catherine O’Hara, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy won in acting categories.
Levy also received the Wilde Wit Award, which honours “a performer, writer or commentator whose observations both challenge and amuse,” according to GALECA.
“It is a great honour to be recognized by all of you because, let’s be honest, you’ve got good taste,” said Levy.
The Dorian Awards take their name from Oscar Wilde’s 1890 novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. Winners were selected by more than 250 entertainment journalists in four countries. (By comparison, winners of the Golden Globes are chosen by only 87 voting members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.)
Schitt’s Creek, which ended its six-season run earlier this year, currently airs on CBC Gem and Showcase.
What We Do in the Shadows, which is filmed in Toronto and airs on CTV Comedy Channel, was named Best Unsung TV Show. Killing Eve, starring Canada’s Sandra Oh, won Best TV Drama.
Despite having three nominations, the made-in-Toronto limited series Miss America failed to win any Dorian TV Awards. Canadian comedian Samantha Bee’s series Full Frontal with Samantha Bee – which counts Canada’s Allana Harkin among its producers – lost Best Current Affairs Program to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
Winners were fêted Sunday (Sept. 13) in a two-hour special that streamed on the Revry app and featured presenters like Margaret Cho, Lea DeLaria, Dave Koz and Alex Newell (from Vancouver, where Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is shot).
