Post-apocalyptic FX series ‘Y’ will be made in Toronto area

Pop Goes The News – After years of development, a new TV series based on the comic book series Y: The Last Man will begin production in the Toronto area early next year.

Y will star Diane Lane and Amber Tamblyn as well as Barry Keoghan, Imogen Poots and Lashana Lynch.

The series takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where women rule because there are no male mammals left except for one man and his monkey. It is scheduled to premiere on FX in 2020.

The network put Y into development in 2015 after plans to make a feature film were scrapped – but a pilot, directed by Melina Matsoukas, wasn’t shot until August 2018.

At New York Comic Con, writer Brian K. Vaughan said the series will reflect the current political climate and described it as the “version that fans deserve.”

Southern Ontario is already home to several series based on comic books or graphic novels, including The Umbrella Academy, The Boys and Titans. It also hosts production of dystopian series The Handmaid’s Tale.
