Howie Mandel reflects on ’80s orgy experience

Pop Goes The News —  Howie Mandel, the Canadian judge on America’s Got Talent, has opened up about an orgy he attended more than 30 years ago.

“Everybody is in the weirdest, oddest position of fucking and sucking,” Mandel recalled in Montreal last week, “and doing things in positions that I have never seen before.”

The experience was particularly traumatic for Mandel, who suffers from mysophobia, the pathological fear of germs.

“There [were] people blowing loads all over the couch.”

Mandel was starring as Dr. Wayne Fiscus on the NBC drama St. Elsewhere (which ran for six seasons from 1982 to 1988) when he was approached about performing a half-hour of stand-up comedy at a private party.

“It was more than what most people make in a year,” he said. “It was more than I was making on the series. It was more than I had ever been paid before.”

Mandel said he asked his wife Terry if she wanted to go with him but she declined so he drove alone to Benedict Canyon, a tony area of Los Angeles, wondering if he was heading to the home of a stalker.

He was stopped at the destination by “a scantily-clad woman,” who told him he had been hired as a surprise for a fan who was having a bachelor party.

Mandel said he was taken through hedges into the backyard of a mansion, where he could hear some kind of celebration. He was told to hide in a small bathroom in the pool house and come out only when he heard his name announced.

“I’m standing in the bathroom going ‘what the fuck did I just get myself into?’” he recalled.

Suddenly, the door opens and a man starts urinating. “I could not press myself close enough to the wall with my face,” Mandel said, “because I don’t want to get piss on me and I don’t want to ruin the surprise.

“I’m trying to be a good employee.”

Within minutes, Mandel heard his name and he emerged from the bathroom.

“My jaw drops,” he said. “It’s a fucking orgy.

“The guy who apparently I am the surprise for is in mid-blowjob. He’s getting blown, he’s hunched over.”

Mandel shared the story during a taping of the Industry Standard with Barry Katz podcast during the Just For Laughs festival.

Mandel recalled how, during the drive home that night, he thought about how he had invited his wife to come with him. “Thank God she said no.”

The comedian, now 60, said it was one of the worst gigs he ever had.

“[Comics] say, ‘Oh I had them peeing in their pants,’” Mandel said. “I had them cumming.”
