Pop Goes The News — Canadian-born comedian Tommy Chong is hoping for good buzz about a collection of pot-themed emojis he launched Friday.
The 77-year-old Edmonton native, who starred in such stoner flicks as Up In Smoke and Still Smokin’, is offering SMOKEmojis like bongs, marijuana leaves, and a wristwatch displaying “4:20.”
According to a description of the collection of over 100 emojis, it is the first time marijuana emojis have been available on the App Store.
“All the way from big bags of weed, down to small bags of weed for when you’re running dry, to french fries made out of joints, to pot leaf bikinis,” it reads, “all the way to prayer hands to ganja, we’ve got all your stoner texting needs ABSOLUTELY covered from top to bottom.”
The SMOKEmojis — “personally made by Tommy Chong himself” — sell for $1.99 in the U.S. and $2.79 in Canada.
Chong, half of the famed comedy duo Cheech & Chong, partnered with New Jersey-based Millennial Digital Renovations on the venture.
On Thursday, Chong joked on Twitter that the app is “probably gonna make $420 million.”
As for why the app launched on 5/20 as opposed to 4/20, one person tweeted a possible explanation.
