Rachel McAdams, The Weeknd among Canadian Oscar nominees

Pop Goes The News — Canadians Emma Donoghue, Rachel McAdams and The Weeknd are among the nominees announced Thursday for the 88th Academy Awards.

Donoghue is up for the Adapted Screenplay prize for Room and McAdams is competing for Supporting Actress for her work in Spotlight.

Emma Donoghue lives in London, Ont., where Rachel McAdams was born. Both their nominated filmed were made in Toronto.

The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye) is nominated with fellow Canadian songwriters Belly (Ahmad Balshe), Jason “DaHeala” Quenneville, and Stephan Moccio in the Best Original Song category for “Earned It” from Fifty Shades of Grey.

Vancouver’s Hamish Purdy, set decorator for The Revenant, is nominated in the Production Design category with Jack Fisk. Robert Pandini of Edmonton shares a Makeup and Hairstyling nomination with Siân Grigg and Duncan Jarman for The Revenant.

Also nominated for their work on the film are Vancouver’s Cameron Waldbauer (Visual Effects) and Chris Duesterdiek (Sound Mixing).

Four of the eight Best Picture nominees were filmed in Canada. In addition to Room and Spotlight, competitors include The Revenant (which was mostly shot in Western Canada) and Brooklyn (partly filmed in Montreal).

They are up against The Martian, The Big Short, Bridge of Spies and Mad Max: Fury Road.

While it’s unlikely to take the top prize at the Academy Awards, Room would be the first movie made entirely in Canada to win Best Picture since Chicago in 2003.

Donoghue, an Irish-born Canadian citizen who lives in London, Ont., wrote the screenplay for Room based on her 2010 novel of the same name.

She also earned nominations at the Golden Globes (she lost to Aaron Sorkin for Steve Jobs) and the BAFTA Awards.

This is the first Oscar nomination for McAdams, who lives in Toronto. The 37-year-old is up against Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Rooney Mara (Carol), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) and Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs).

Vancouver’s Jacob Tremblay, the nine-year-old star of Room, failed to make the Oscar cut. He and Donoghue earned Dorian Awards nods on Tuesday.

The Revenant also earned nominations for Leonardo DiCaprio (Best Actor), Tom Hardy (Supporting Actor) and Alejandro González Iñárritu (Directing).

It leads the pack with 12 nominations, followed by Mad Max: Fury Road with 10.

Sicario, directed by Canada’s Denis Villeneuve, earned Oscar nominations for Sound Editing, Cinematography and Original Score.

The 88th Academy Awards will be handed out Feb. 28 in a show hosted by Chris Rock.
