Pop Goes The News — A new ABC drama series will be filmed in Toronto next year, giving another boost to the city’s production industry.
Probable Cause, originally known as Sex, Lies and Handwriting, is scheduled to go into production in July.
Inspired by a book by Michelle Dresbold, the series follows a handwriting expert who uses her skills to help solve crimes.
No casting information has been announced.
Probable Cause was originally scheduled to be made in Vancouver, so its arrival in Toronto comes as good news for a production community that recently lost A Meyer’s Christmas to Atlanta and learned of the indefinite postponement of Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.
MORE: The Maze Runner: The Death Cure will be shot in B.C.
A number of made-in-Toronto series have also ended their runs, including Beauty and the Beast, Rookie Blue, Defiance and Lost Girl. The first season of Heroes Reborn and sophomore season of Man Seeking Woman recently wrapped production in the city and season 5 of Suits is about to finish filming.
Although the pilot for Fox’s Minority Report was shot in Toronto, production of the series moved to Vancouver earlier this year.
News that Probable Cause is setting up in Toronto comes on the heels of news that two other U.S. series will be shot in the city next year.
Cameras will roll on 13 episodes of the CBS summer series American Gothic (which is set in Boston) from March to July. It tells the story of a socially-connected family that believes their recently deceased patriarch was a serial killer — and one of them might have been his accomplice.
American Gods, a series for cable channel Starz, is scheduled to shoot in Toronto from March to August. Set in Pittsburgh and based on Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name, it’s a fantasy about war between mythical gods and modern ones.
Production of a second season of Killjoys is scheduled to begin in December.
MORE: Matt Damon to shoot Downsizing in Toronto
Also shooting in Toronto currently is the first season of The Code, season 2 of The Good Witch and 12 Monkeys and season 3 of Reign and The Strain.
Other projects coming to the city include the movie Downsizing, starring Matt Damon, Reese Witherspoon, Neil Patrick Harris and Alec Baldwin — filming April to July — and xXx: The Return of Xander Cage.
