Tom Hardy shoots down question about his sexuality

Pop Goes The News — Actor Tom Hardy was in no mood to talk about his sexuality Saturday at a press conference to promote his new movie Legend.

Hardy was confronted with the subject during a press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Graeme Coleman of LGBT website Daily Xtra used the sexuality of Hardy’s character in Legend to put the actor on the spot about comments he made in past interviews.

“Given interviews you’ve done in the past, your own sexuality seems a bit more ambiguous,” Coleman noted. “Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to media about their sexuality?”

Hardy replied: “What on earth are you on about?”

Coleman was referring to a 2008 interview with British magazine Attitude in which Hardy said “of course” when asked if he had ever had same sex relations.

“I’ve played with everything and everyone. But I’m not into men sexually. I love the form and the physicality but the gay sex bit does nothing for me,” he said.

“It doesn’t do it for me and I’m done experimenting.”

He went on: “It just doesn’t do it for me, sex with another man. But there’s plenty of stuff in a relationship with another man, especially gay men, that I need in my life.”

In 2011, as his fame was growing, Hardy seemed to downplay his words.

“I have never put my penis in a man,” he told Marie Claire. “I’ve never had a cock in my arse, and I have no fucking desire for it.

“If that’s what you like, cool. But it doesn’t do it for me.”

On Saturday, Hardy wasn’t keen to rehash the subject.

“What is your question?” he asked the reporter.

“I was wondering if you find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality,” Coleman asked again.

Hardy said he does not find it difficult, then asked: “Are you asking me about my sexuality?

“Why?”

He then ended the conversation with a chilly “Thank you.”

Hardy, 37, had a five-year marriage that ended in 2004 and has been married to actress Charlotte Riley — who is pregnant with their first child together — for just over a year. He also has a 7-year-old son with a former girlfriend.

Hardy is known for his roles in The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road and Inception. He stars with Leonardo DiCaprio in the upcoming Alberta-shot film The Revenant.
