Pop Goes The News — Filming of the U.S. television series Quantico is underway in Canada — and all eyes are on its Indian star.
Priyanka Chopra is a Bollywood superstar making her North American small screen debut in the ABC series about a group of recruits training at the FBI’s titular Virginia academy.
Chopra plays Alex Parrish, a recruit who we learn (through a flash-forward) becomes an agent accused of masterminding a terrorist attack in New York City. She escapes custody and sets out to discover the truth.
While the pilot episode was made in Atlanta, the series is being filmed on sound stages at La Cité du Cinéma in Montreal and at locations around the city (and about 90 minutes east at the l’Université de Sherbrooke).
On Tuesday, scenes are being shot in Old Montreal on rue St-Jacques and rue Notre-Dame between St-Pierre and McGill.
Production, which began last month, is scheduled to wrap in mid-December. Additional filming is taking place in New York City.
Quantico also stars Aunjanue Ellis (NCIS: Los Angeles), Jake McLaughlin (Believe) and Tate Ellington (The Mindy Project).
But none has the social media reach of Chopra, who is one of the highest-paid and most famous actresses in India.
The 33-year-old former beauty queen has made more than 50 movies since 2002 and recorded songs with artists like will.i.am and Pitbull.
Chopra has 16 million “likes” on Facebook and 10.7 million followers on Twitter, where she regularly answers questions from fans.
“Miles away from my country,” she wrote on Facebook on Aug. 15, “the scent of rain on dry mud, reminds of my home…my people…my India!”
On Instagram, where she has 2.7 million followers, the actress has been sharing images from Montreal.
Quantico debuts Sept. 27 on ABC and CTV. Chopra has said the show will also be broadcast in her native country.
